Now is the Time for All Good Ethiopian Men and Women to Come to the Aid of Their Country!

By Alemayehu G. Mariam

There is nice wisdom in the previous typing drill, “This is the time for all good men and women to come to the aid of their country.”

I might argue more particularly this is the time for all good Ethiopian legal professionals, docs, engineers, professors, teachers, writers, journalists, academics, service staff and all others to come to the help of their country.

The information we must all face at the moment are these:

The management of the Tigrean Individuals’s Liberation Front (TPLF) hiding out in Mekele believes Ethiopia will soon be plunged into ethnic civil conflict and implode.

The TPLF “doomsday preppers ” are getting ready to exploit the assumed impending anarchy and dysfunction and steal their method again to power. Identical to they did in Might 1991.

Over the past yr, the TPLF has been orchestrating chaos, lawlessness, anarchy and dysfunction all through the land. They are doing all the things they will to make that occur with the billions they stole.

The TPLF has one and just one objective.

If they can’t have Ethiopia as their playground, they may do their damnedest to flip her into Yugoslavia.

They are drooling at the mouth just serious about it.

The late TPLF Uber Boss Meles Zenawi was fond of scare-talk about how Ethiopia will go the approach of Yugoslavia without his guiding hand and the TPLF’s command and control.

Balkanization was Meles’ dream for Ethiopia.

The TPLF prophets of doom and gloom as we speak predict it is only a matter of time before Ethiopia becomes the next Syria or Libya.

Daily, the TPLF pumps empty blusters about secession and bravado about its army may.

The TPLF previous foggies are nonetheless dwelling in the 1960s. They assume right now is 1991.

A couple of days in the past, the TPLF issued an announcement demanding a return to “the good old days.”

The TPLF wackjobs assume they will turn back the arms of time.

They need to return to power so dangerous, they’re prepared to sell their grandmothers to get it.

Absurd as it sounds, the TPLF leaders anticipate to march into Addis Ababa soon as TPLF Knights in Shining Armor prepared to save the Ethiopian damsel in distress.

In fact, the TPLF will return to energy at some point.

That might be the day when hell freezes over the and satan goes ice skating. Alternatively, when pigs fly.

Till then, TPLFers ought to make a cushty permanent residence in the trash bin of history.

I prophesied the finish of the TPLF in February 2013: “Meles and his worshippers have profoundly troubled the Ethiopian house and they shall inherit the wind!”

That is exactly, precisely what they did!

They inherited the wind.

Quickly, they are going to be gone, gone with the wind!

To hell!!

Evil never sleeps. Neither does the TPLF.

We should keep eternal vigilance and keep on retaining on.

In the meantime, we should always man up, clever up, rise up, step up, shape up and get down to give assist to our country in its second of biggest need.

Can Ethiopian intellectuals come to the assist of their nation?

An previous Jewish proverb teaches, “A nation’s treasure is its scholars (intellectuals).”

I might add a nation’s intellectuals must be the tip of the spear in political and social change.

George Ayittey, the distinguished Ghanaian economist, has a decidedly dim view of African intellectuals normally.

Ayittey argues African intellectuals have “prostituted themselves, promoting off their rules and integrity to partake of the plunder, misrule and repression of the African individuals.

I should like to argue the lion’s share of obligation and burden of aiding Ethiopia in its hour of want rests on the shoulders of its group of scholars, teachers and discovered males and ladies.

Ethiopia has no scarcity of degreed individuals, specialists and intellectuals.

The number of Ethiopians sporting doctoral acronyms after their names is mind bending: Ph.Ds, M.Ds, J.Ds, D.As, D.B.As, D.Ds, EdDs, D.M.As, D.P.As, D.P.Hs, D.Scs, D.S.Ws, D.V.Ms, O.Ds…

However in aiding Ethiopia, the vast majority of the “doctors” have been as helpful as a picket frying pan.

Unfortunately, we, the “doctors”, have deluded ourselves into considering talking in jargon and writing in fancy educational publications makes us special.

We expect the educational acronyms after our names someway rework our phrases into gospel fact.

The very fact is we aren’t special.

We’re solely fortunate to have the opportunity to get an schooling which is denied to 99.99 % of our individuals.

Our degrees don’t imply diddly squat when 85 % of our individuals are consuming polluted water from the river. Or die from preventable illnesses.

How many of us “doctors” have scoured the countryside to see the abject poverty of the individuals and the degrading circumstances beneath which they stay each day?

The bulk of Ethiopians reside on lower than $1 a day.

How many of us are prepared to donate $1 a day to assist them out?

The phrase “doctor” originates in the Latin verb docēre, which suggests “to teach”.

I don’t see many Ethiopian “doctors” educating the (young, virtually 80% of Ethiopia’s inhabitants) individuals.

For years, I’ve been calling on Ethiopian intellectuals to train and preach to the individuals.

For years, I’ve been calling on Ethiopian intellectuals to come to the assist of their country.

I remorse to say, the vast majority turned a deaf ear to my calls.

Back in June 2010, I wrote a commentary entitled, “Where Have the Ethiopian Intellectuals Gone?”

(I nonetheless do not know where they’ve gone!)

I argued Ethiopian intellectuals have been hopelessly wallowing in crises syndrome.

Ethiopian intellectuals are trapped in a “moral crisis”.

The overwhelming majority of us are confused about what is right and mistaken or are willfully ignorant of the distinction. We now have turned a blind eye and deaf ears to not only to many years of injustice but in addition have turn into depravedly indifferent to the widespread good of the future. Moral outrage has died a quiet demise in our midst.

Ethiopian intellectuals endure from a “crisis of critical thinking”.

We frequently lack depth in our analysis and susceptible to making fast conclusions based mostly on hunches, speculations and gossip. We resort to polemics and labeling and consign anybody who disagrees with our point of view to everlasting damnation. We not often look at and re-examine our assumptions and beliefs however cling to them as everlasting truths and propagate them as such.

Ethiopian intellectuals endure a “crisis of self-confidence and intellectual courage”.

The overwhelming majority of us are afraid to take a stand or to make our views recognized because we worry the ridicule and ostracism of our associates and friends. We are stricken by “intellectual cowardicitus” which manifests itself in herd mentality and groupthink. We’re afraid to take possession and duty for our ideas for worry of being proven fallacious and mask our intellectual cowardice with meaningless dogmas and abstractions. Missing self-confidence, we have now moored ourselves on islands of self-censorship and self-marginalization.

Ethiopian intellectuals endure from a “crisis of foresight”.

Ethiopian intellectuals are specialists on dwelling on the previous although few of us have any substantive historic understanding. We passionately criticize the past and present however  do very little forward-thinking. As Ethiopia’s “eyes”, we’re sarcastically troubled by myopia (nearsightedness). We understand a country that would probably be dismembered by “ethnic federalism” but lack the vision to make it entire. We blather about accession to political power however we lack the foresight and contingency planning crucial to guarantee democratic governance.

Ethiopian intellectuals endure from a “crisis of communication”.

The vast majority of Ethiopian intellectuals speak past each other and lack mental honesty and candor in our communications. We fake to agree and give lip service to each other solely to turn round and interact in vile backbiting. Typically we do not say what we mean or imply what we are saying. We maintain each other guessing. We make little effort to genuinely seek widespread floor with those that do not agree with us. We’ve got a nasty behavior of marginalizing those that disagree with us and tell it like it is. We hate to admit error and apologize. As an alternative we compound mistakes by committing extra errors. We have a tendency to be overly crucial of one another over non-essentials. Consequently, we’ve got failed to nurture coherent and dynamic intellectual discourse about Ethiopia’s present and future.

Ethiopian intellectuals endure a “crisis of intellectual leadership”.

There are few identifiable Ethiopian intellectual leaders right now. In many societies, a diverse and competing intellectual group features as the tip of the spear of social change. We now have witnessed the highly effective position performed by intellectual leaders in emancipating Japanese Europe from the clutches of communist tyranny and in main a peaceful course of of change. No society can ever aspire to advance and not using a core mental guiding drive. The founders of the American Republic were not merely political leaders but in addition intellectuals of the highest caliber for any age. Ethiopian intellectuals sadly wallow in a quagmire of recrimination, finger pointing and mudslinging.

I have challenged Ethiopia’s intellectuals to stand up and come to the assist of the country on quite a few occasions.

In my Might 2011 Huffington Submit piece, I famous the proven fact that I had “publicly called for the establishment of an informal policy “think tank” to analysis and critically consider current and emergent issues in Ethiopia. Wouldn’t it not be fantastic if there could possibly be union of concerned Ethiopian scholars, scientists, intellectuals and professionals who might come collectively as the tip of the spear in in search of to institutionalize democracy, human rights and rule of regulation in Ethiopia?”

I repeated the similar name in April 2018, to no avail.

In my July 2012 commentary, I argued, “Ethiopian intellectuals need to organize themselves to bridge the information and knowledge gap and come up with fresh and creative ideas to help transition Ethiopia from dictatorship to democracy. I plead with members of the Ethiopian academic and scholarly community to also become public intellectuals.”

All of my calls to Ethiopian intellectuals to develop into the vanguard of change in Ethiopia have fallen on deaf ears!

Hear! Hear! Ethiopian intellectuals. Will the moment outline you or will you define the moment?

It is a brand new world in Ethiopia. The youthful era has taken over.

In January 2013, I prophesied Ethiopia’s Cheetah Era (younger individuals) “is the  only generation that can deliver Ethiopia from the fangs of a benighted dictatorship and transform a decaying and decomposing garrison state built on a foundation of lies into one that is deeply rooted in the consent and sovereignty of the people.”

That prophesy has come to move!

In a aspect swipe, I remarked: “Ethiopia’s intellectual Hippos [older generation] by and large have chosen to stand on the sidelines with arms folded, ears plugged, mouths  sealed shut and eyes blindfolded.”

The time has come to fish or minimize bait for Ethiopia’s intellectuals.

In other words, the time has come to stop talking, complaining, griping, moaning, groaning, gossiping and rumor-mongering about Ethiopia’s problems and start doing one thing about them.

The time for fence-sitting is over. No extra sticking fingers in the air and determining which method the wind is blowing.

The time for countless bickering, wind bagging and intellectual pontification is over.

The time to be Hen Littles is over.

The time has come to begin speaking about what is proper about Ethiopia and doing proper by the individuals of Ethiopia.

It is silly to sit around twiddling one’s thumb waiting to see a disintegrating Ethiopia according to the Gospel of the TPLF.

No need to fret about Ethiopia going to hell in a hand basket.

There is a particular place in hell for the TPLF.

The TPLF will disintegrate and vanish into oblivion but Ethiopia shall stay one till kingdom come!

The time has come to stop finger pointing at our excellent 43-year previous prime minister and begin taking a look at the three fingers pointing at us and ask, “What did I do for my country when I was 43 years old?”

I can be absolutely trustworthy in answering that question. So should each Ethiopian who claims to be an intellectual with integrity.

What did I (otherwise you?) do for Ethiopia once I was 43 years previous?

Not a doggone factor!

Doggone it!

I might have completed a lot. But I didn’t as a result of I used to be selfish.

It took the Meles Massacres to jolt me out of my selfishness.

It is true there comes a time in every individual’s life when s/he defines the second or is defined by it.

The Meles Massacres defined me.

Meles and his TPLF goons fought with their AK47s.

I fought them back with my pen and keyboard.

I consider I proved, “The pen is mightier than the sword.”

I adopted Thomas Jefferson’s counsel (the man who wrote the American Declaration of Independence) to Thomas Paine in 1796: “Go on doing with your pen what in other times was done with the sword.”

I fought the TPLF with my pen and my concepts and phrases.

My phrases proved to be more highly effective that the TPLF’s AK47s.

I never stated I might change Ethiopia. I stated I might change the hearts and minds of the younger individuals who will change Ethiopia in my very first full commentary in 2006 once I joined the Ethiopian human rights motion.

I consider I succeeded in that effort beyond my wildest expectations.

Ideas change hearts and minds. Nothing can cease an concept whose time has come.

Democratic beliefs defeated Nazism in Germany, fascism in Italy, racial apartheid in  South Africa and ethnic apartheid in Ethiopia.

“No matter what people tell you, words and ideas do change the world.”

It is high time to put words and ideas to work in Ethiopia!

Let’s have a battle of ideas and let the greatest concept win!

The cacophonous phase of the Ethiopian mental group likes to bark at PM Abiy Ahmed about what he is doing fallacious.

By and giant, the accusations are unsubstantiated emotional outpourings.

To my information, there is not a single accusation of wrongdoing towards PM Abiy supported by meticulously documented evidence.

I problem anybody to produce such evidence in public.

The accusation hurled at PM Abiy in the primary are boilerplate rumors, innuendoes and gossip liberally laced with ethnic animus.

The very fact of the matter is PM Abiy is merely a prodigious mind.

There is not a single intellectual in Ethiopia or in the diaspora right now who has the breadth of information or mastery and command of domestic and overseas policy issues.

Abiy Ahmed is a strategic thinker of the first order. He is simply sensible. No ifs or buts about it!

But don’t take my phrase for that.

Hear for your self what the fearless and long-persecuted champion and doyen of Ethiopian human rights, the 89 year-old Prof. Mesfin Woldemariam lately stated!

Over a period of seven many years, we all know Prof. Mesfin  is not given to hyperbole or exaggeration nor does he hand out reward calmly.

A couple of weeks in the past, Prof. Mesfin urging Ethiopians to “give 100 percent support” to PM Abiy stated:

… Abiy is particular. Abiy, as far as I know, there is no ferenji (foreigner) or habesha (Ethiopian), I’ve never seen anyone who has a mind like Abiy. Regardless of what area, regardless of what instructional self-discipline, he can converse authoritatively with no piece of paper (observe). I do not know how he disciplined his mind. He is a tremendous individual…

… I simply don’t understand how his mind is crafted. I just don’t know [what to say] about that man. His mind is phenomenal. He has a tremendous mind.

I do know this deflates and steamrolls the fragile egos of so many Ethiopian intellectuals.

The truth is there is not a single Ethiopian intellectual immediately who can maintain a candle to Abiy Ahmed.

All I can say is, “Deal with it! Challenge and defeat Abiy Ahmed in the arena of ideas, in the marketplace of ideas, if you can.”

In fact, all of that is beside the point.

The point is Abiy Ahmed has made us a suggestion we will’t refuse!

He has invited Ethiopia’s intellectuals in Ethiopia and in the diaspora to problem him with ideas to change Ethiopia and makes the lives of the individuals higher.

So, let’s present him the way it’s accomplished.

Let’s put in the public area concepts and insurance policies which might be vastly superior to PM Abiy’s.

Let us present him we’ve a better concept than his Medemer.

Allow us to suggest unique and artistic concepts and demand a task in their implementation.

Who stated Abiy Ahmed has all the solutions to Ethiopia’s issues?

Who stated Abiy Ahmed has a monopoly on all the good ideas for Ethiopia?

What I do know for a reality is that Abiy Ahmed is open to all artistic, progressive and daring concepts.

He is definitely not afraid of concepts.

His clarion name has all the time been let’s have matchups in the market of concepts and let the individuals have a selection.

His clarion name has been let’s have a free and truthful election and let the greatest celebration win truthful and square. If he loses the election, he will depart workplace inside 24 hours.

Abiy Ahmed means what he says and says what he means. There is no BS with him.

He is a straight talker. He will say what can and cannot be carried out. He does not sugarcoat the bitter fact. He does not mince and dice the fact to make it more palatable.

The actual problem for Ethiopian intellectuals is to DO one thing proper to make Ethiopia right.

If there are government wrongs, it is time to make them proper. We have now the information, as we claim, to right wrongs.

If PM Abiy is doing things improper, let’s present him how to do it proper.

Admittedly, he didn’t go to fancy universities like we did. So, he does not know every thing like we do.

He spent his youth in uniform doing what he can beneath a repressive regime.

He successfully undertook grassroots organizing together with his workforce to rid Ethiopia from the TPLF cancer on the Ethiopian body politic.

Day by day, Abiy Ahmed preaches, “Let’s build a new Ethiopia. If Ethiopia is heading down the wrong track, let’s put our shoulders to the wheel and noses to the grindstone and put her on the right track.”

If Ethiopia is proper on the precipice of implosion as the TPLF doomsayers say, it’s our job to pull her again to safety.

How so?

We pool our huge mental assets and come to the assist of Ethiopia.

Information is energy. Actionable information is strongest.

We now have the engineering information to tear down walls and  build bridges to convey our individuals together across ethnic spiritual strains.

We’ve the legal information to help construct an orderly society, a society built on a basis of equality, justice and the rule of regulation.

We’ve information in schooling. We will carry the cloud of darkness of ignorance enveloping our individuals.

We’ve got business information. Let us promote innovation and entrepreneurship amongst Ethiopia’s youth.

We’ve medical information. Let’s assist heal our nation.

We now have the experience, information and expertise to help our people who find themselves suffering.

However information, intelligence, schooling and learning are of little value if we lack imaginative and prescient, creativeness, creativity and inspiration.

My CHALLENGE to all Ethiopian intellectuals: Stop talking. Stop moaning and groaning. Convey forth actionable ideas to help construct the New Ethiopia.

I hereby formally accept PM Abiy’s long-standing challenge to Ethiopian intellectuals to provide you with progressive, artistic and practical concepts to assist the individuals of Ethiopia.

Under, I’ve listed more than two dozen coverage areas which Ethiopian intellectuals may also help tackle and enhance current circumstances in Ethiopia or help guarantee constructive outcomes in the future.

I intend to difficulty my personal “white papers” on many of the issues listed under.

Certainly, on a quantity of the points I have expressed my views in commentary type.

Frankly, I’m wondering what number of other Ethiopian intellectuals may also rise up to the occasion with me .

If the previous 14 years are an indication, the answer is crystal clear.

Once I stood up to the TPLF and exposed its lengthy practice of abuses in Ethiopia over the previous 13 years, I stood alone each week and fought tooth and nail with my pen and keyboard.

Sure, there were a number of fair-weather warriors who showed up from time to time, particularly when the TPLF appeared weak, to join in the battle cry.

I have heard the battle cry of “ye dil atbiya arbegnoch” from time to time.

Suffice it to say I will eat crow (vegan type, of course), if some other Ethiopian intellectual responds to the CHALLENGE.

I hope all will critically look at my forthcoming proposals and ideas and enhance upon them or provide you with their own unique ideas.

I am not afraid to deal with points past my areas of expertise.

I apply the art of asking questions and making use of crucial considering to issues.

Albert Einstein observed, “Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited, whereas imagination embraces the entire world, stimulating progress, giving birth to evolution.”

The TPLF made Ethiopia a dystopia.

I think about a utopia of Ethiopia.

As I’ve stated many occasions earlier than, I proudly call myself a utopian Ethiopian.

I like to think about the New Ethiopia. That makes me an “imagineer”.

Creativeness is not fantasy.

Ethiopia desperately wants intellectuals with imagination.

Creativeness is a process of asking probing questions about things that have but to happen.

The lawyer’s skilled life revolves around a simple principle: Ask countless questions to get at the fact.

I shall be asking countless questions on the subjects listed under.

The jury of the entire individuals will render a verdict on the answers and ideas I present.

How can we scale back, forestall and get rid of ethnic and communal violence and battle?

How can we ensure a free, truthful and peaceful election in 2020?

How can we type non-ethnic robust issue-based political events?

How can we amend, revise or create a totally new constitution?

How can we cope with terrorism sponsored by secret groups?

How can we create economic alternatives for our youth?

How can we promote overseas direct funding in Ethiopia?

How can we promote tourism and make half of a sustainable financial improvement effort?

How can we improve and maximize diaspora remittances?

How can we quickly improve the country’s overseas change reserve?

How can we institutionalize the rule of regulation?

How can we create good governance?

How can we enhance instructional quality at the elementary, secondary and school levels?

How can we successfully management corruption?

How can we enhance the performance and professionalism of the civil service?

How can we enhance professionalism in journalism?

How can we enhance the professionalization of the army, safety and police forces?

How can we struggle pretend information and disinformation on social media?

How can we enhance the legal and civil laws of the nation?

How can we enhance social relations by means of improved communication?

How can we cope with issues of ethnic and spiritual bias and bigotry?

How can we promote tolerance, civility in the public sq.?

How can we establish a community-based fact and reconciliation process?

How can we dismantle ethnic federalism or retain it?

How can we conduct an correct census?

How can we handle population progress?

How can we promote preventive well being care and sanitation?

How do we offer clean water to the 85 % of the Ethiopian inhabitants that does not have it?

How can we empower ladies economically?

How can we manage the recurrent problems of famine and meals crises?

How can we shield the setting and conserve assets?

How can we….?

Let’s stop speaking and provide you with sound concepts to do one thing. Something!

Now is the Time for All Good Ethiopian Men and Women to Come to the Aid of Their Nation!
